The Character of God

Mankind’s biggest quest is the seeking and understanding of God. Maybe the answer lies inside all of us. Concrete evidence can be found in our beliefs and in the acceptance of the ancient writings and way of life. Mankind is not a new species; neither is the earth and all her systems. Numerous archeological finds yield interesting and surprising details about our previous history. Man in his arrogance and delusions of grandeur refuse to accept the power and creative genius that created the universe. The physical universe abounds with marvelous wonders of a loving and creative God. A friend words stopped me recently, she said ‘look at the green leaves on the trees, they bud each spring after winter, can men hands do that’. The processes that go on in the removal and renewing of nature and of life are well thought out and executed.

God has made mankind and given him reason and understanding. The appeal is to atheist, the segment of readers who don’t believe in God and second to portray some characteristics of God. God is an eternal being; we can’t contain or quantify him. He is too big for us to comprehend completely. We can know and trust in him by the record he’s left, also he speaks; in fact God never stops talking to us. Are you listening? The whole universe is his record of love and devotion to mankind. Cool breezes on a hot summer’s day, a drink of water to a thirsty throat, food to a hungry stomach are just some of the creator’s awesome provision. A walk in a beautiful park, serene, water flowing in a river or brook, birds and butterflies alighting on colorful flowers, God’s love is evident in the simple the sublime.

God is unchangeable, and the scriptures reveal his many attributes. My focus is on three important qualities, that god is spirit, he is light and he also is love. The book of John 4:24 says “god [is] a spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth”. Many of us, who deny the existence of god, have difficulty grasping the concept that god is not like man, that he is indeed spirit. If god is the creator of the whole universe, whereby he created the solar system, the weather system, the sea, the land and all that is in them? Isn’t it fair to say that god is bigger than what we can comprehend in our limited state? Our physical bodies, a marvel in design also limits us, we are earthbound in this state.

There are two ways to leave planet earth, either through death or becoming an astronaut. Death is a changed state of being; no one has control over death when it happens. Death is final and irreversible, certain individuals have relayed to me that when a person dies that’s it, there is no eternity (or afterlife). How can one truly know these things without studying the bible or developing their spiritual nature? I think it’s arrogant for us to say after death, that there is nothing more. What is life then? Why do we live? Where do we come from? Where are we going when we pass on? In this season and hour God is allowing us to know more of him, he’s revealing knowledge and information, if you care to find it’s available. So many individuals have had near death experiences, they all come back changed and their stories are all similar.

The astronaut mode of travel involves encapsulation in a cylindrical object. We couldn’t just fly out; forces of gravity, the magnetic pull of the earth keep us earthbound. The astronaut is essentially a scientist, or seeker trying to understand the galaxy. While scientists have done wonderful research, numerous theories such as evolution are not without errors. The writers, teachers, scientist, educators and clergy responsible for dissemination of information must understand their positions and roles in our society. It’s the erroneous teachings of times past that have undermined our faith and belief in God. Man has and will always seek to understand his life. Proverbs 14:12 states “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death” Our ways are limited, God is without limits. I know this because of the awesome testimony of his creation.

So who or what is responsible for these processes that are acting on us? I say this to explain spirit is in charge of all our present reality. We have enough evidence of the existence of the spirit world, supernatural or paranormal whichever one works for you. Something bigger than you or I or any one past or present is at work here. I will also say that with the advent of all this information God is unveiling in this hour. This generation will be judged severely by God. Imagine the great men of God in biblical times, Noah and Moses good examples; they had no bibles or computers. They relied solely on the voice of God; imagine the ridicule from their families and societies, we have it good my friends in this age.

An article I read recently said that God has stopped speaking audibly. The writer was referring to biblical times when God spoke audibly to Moses concerning the Ten Commandments. The Bible lets us know that God spoke audibly to Moses the last time in recorded history. Why did he stop speaking audibly? He spoke to Adam too. Was it because man was not listening? God is so full of love he constantly tries to engage us over and over again. So tell me why God has to constantly repeat the same message time and time again to mankind. He sent Jesus people, his only begotten son, John 3:16. Even if Jesus was to come back again some of us still won’t believe. Some of us will die in our unbelief and wake up in eternity to realize the bible was real. To those who say the Bible is a story, where is your plan B just in case.

Isaiah 55:8-9 states that “for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts”. God is still speaking, we are in denial. He has tried many ways to get our attention. God is not man, man cannot negotiate with him. Our prayers do not change God; he is God all by himself. Jesus is our mediator sitting on the right hand of the father interceding for us. I digress, back to God as spirit.

God is not made of matter, he has no dimensions, no parts, he is spirit, and our limited senses can’t perceive how this could be. Just acknowledge that he is God and believe in him. Your spirit man knows this but the enemy has contaminated mankind and seduced him into thinking that he doesn’t need God. God is omnipresent which means to be everywhere at the same time. Jeremiah 23: 23-24 “Am I only a God nearby,” declares the LORD, “and not a God far away? “Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do not I fill heaven and earth? “declares the LORD”. The laws of earth don’t apply to God, since he is ruler over earth and heaven. We want to negotiate with him, we want to disobey his commandments to have our cake and eat it too. This is not a new dilemma for man, Adam and Eve sinned and they went to hide. Adam knew what he did,we know what we do, all of us. We will be held accountable, Matthew 10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. How do you work out our salvation? With fear and trembling. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

I spoke about being man being earthbound earlier; If God had a body he would be confined to a particular place.Spirit is able to move in different dimensions. The scriptures tell us he fills all of heaven and earth with his glory. God himself declares that he is Alpha and Omega, no beginning and no end. He has and always will be God. ….

To God be the Glory!

One comment on “The Character of God

  1. Amen. Well said.

The Lord definitely speaks to us today. For me, I perceive His voice in my spirit. A young Christian may not hear His voice very well, but as we grow stronger in Christ and die to self, we begin to hear His voice more clearly. A spiritual man definitely hears from God; a carnal Christian probably has to rely on Scripture.

Once in my life have I heard an audible voice. Back in December of 1989 I was asleep when I heard this strong, stern, masculine voice say, “Prepare thyself!” It was a command, not a suggestion. It really the surprised the tar right out of me.
